  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon corn syrup
  • as desired Food coloring Optional for tinting the bioplastic.

Additional Materials

  • 1 parchment paper For spreading the bioplastic.
  • as needed shape cutters or molds To shape your suncatchers.
  • 1 paintbrush Optional, for creating holes.
  • 1 piece scissors To trim edges if necessary.
  • 1 string or fishing line For hanging the suncatchers.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a medium saucepan, mix together cornstarch, water, white vinegar, and corn syrup.
  • Stir the mixture over medium heat until it thickens, about 5-10 minutes, until the texture is smooth and glossy.

Coloring

  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and add a few drops of food coloring if desired, stirring well.

Shaping

  • Place a sheet of parchment paper on a flat surface and spoon the bioplastic mixture onto it, spreading into desired shapes.
  • Use shape cutters or molds for fun designs, and create small holes at the top of each shape with a paintbrush if making hanging suncatchers.

Drying

  • Allow the suncatchers to dry for at least 24 hours. Alternatively, place them in the oven at low temperature for faster drying.

Final Touches

  • Once dry, carefully peel the suncatchers off the parchment paper and trim any rough edges with scissors.
  • Use string or fishing line to hang your suncatchers by threading through the holes.

Notes

Customize colors further by mixing for tie-dye effects, adding biodegradable glitter for sparkle, or experimenting with natural dyes from fruits or vegetables. Use matching sets for seasonal decor.
