Ingredients
  

For the geode solution

  • 1 cup Borax (sodium borate) Key ingredient for crystal formation
  • 3 cups Water Use hot water for the best results
  • ½ cup Rock salt or sugar Optional, for texture in crystals
  • to taste drops Food coloring (various colors) Customize your geodes with different colors

For setup

  • as needed containers Small containers (such as egg cartons or glass jars) For holding the crystal solution
  • 1 piece Twine or small rock Acts as a base for your crystals
  • 1 pair Gloves and safety goggles Recommended for safety while handling hot solution

Instructions
 

Preparation of Solution

  • In a pot, mix 3 cups of water with 1 cup of Borax.
  • If using rock salt or sugar, add about ½ cup to the mixture.
  • Bring the solution to a gentle boil while stirring until everything is dissolved.

Adding Color

  • Decide on your color palette and add a few drops of food coloring to the solution, stirring gently to avoid bubbles.
  • Note that a faint smell may occur due to the heating process.

Setting Up Containers

  • Place your small containers on a flat surface.
  • Pour the hot solution into each container, filling them to about three-quarters full.

Inserting Crystals

  • If desired, place a piece of twine or a rock at the bottom of the container to act as a base for your crystals.
  • Allow the containers to sit overnight or for at least 24 hours in a cool, undisturbed location.

Revealing Your Geodes

  • Carefully remove the geodes from the containers, which should have formed interesting shapes and beautiful crystals.
  • Observe the different textures and colors of the crystals formed.

Notes

You can customize your project by experimenting with multiple food coloring combinations, adjusting container sizes, or adding glitter for sparkle. Always ensure safety when handling hot solutions.
