  • 1 cup Clear vegetable or canola oil Lighter oils work best for this effect.
  • 1 cup Water Fill the jar about ¾ full.
  • various drops Food coloring (various colors) Choose your favorite colors for vibrant effects.
  • 1 piece Small container or glass (for oil) To contain the oil before adding it to the jar.
  • 1 tall jar Tall clear glass jar To hold the mixture.
  • 1 piece Toothpick or skewer For swirling the colors.
  • as needed Glow-in-the-dark paint (optional) For added glow effect.

Preparation

  • Choose a flat surface where any spills can be easily cleaned.
  • Gather all your materials for easy access.

Mixing

  • Pour water into the clear glass jar, filling it about ¾ full.
  • Carefully pour oil into the jar with water; observe it float due to different densities.
  • Drop different colors of food coloring into the oil layer and watch as they sink.
  • Use the toothpick or skewer to poke and swirl the colors gently.
  • If using glow-in-the-dark paint, add a few drops to the oil.

Notes

Customize colors with neon or metallic food coloring, experiment with different oils, add eco-friendly glitter for sparkle, and change colors for seasonal themes.
