  • 1 cup Water Fill the container about one-quarter full.
  • 1 cup Vegetable oil Slowly pour until the container is nearly full.
  • a few drops Food coloring Choose your favorite colors.
  • 2-3 tablets Alka-Seltzer tablets Break into smaller pieces to activate the lava effect.
  • optional Glitter or small beads For added flair.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by selecting a clean, clear container that shows off the lava lamp effect.
  • Fill the container about one-quarter full with water.

Creating the Lava Effect

  • Slowly pour vegetable oil into the container until it’s nearly full, leaving some space at the top. Observe how the oil floats on top of the water, as they do not mix.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring to the water and watch as it creates beautiful streaks in the water layer.
  • Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces and drop one piece into the container to see the bubbles rise, creating the lava lamp effect!
  • To continue the effect, simply add more pieces of Alka-Seltzer as needed.

Final Touch

  • Turn off the lights, and watch your homemade lava lamp glow and move.

Notes

Experiment with different food coloring combinations for a rainbow effect, and personalize your lamp to match your decor. Adult supervision is recommended, especially during the use of Alka-Seltzer.
