Materials

  • 1 bottle or jar Clear plastic bottle or glass jar (preferably with a lid) Any clear container will work.
  • 1 cup Water Fill the container about one quarter full.
  • 1 cup Vegetable oil (or baby oil) Leave some space at the top after pouring in.
  • a few drops drops Food coloring (any color) Choose your favorite colors.
  • 1 tablet Alka-Seltzer tablets (or similar) Break into smaller pieces for adding.
  • optional Glitter or small gems Add for extra sparkle.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start with a clean and dry plastic bottle or glass jar.
  • Fill the container about one quarter full with water.

Add Oil

  • Pour vegetable oil into the container until it's nearly full, leaving some space at the top.
  • Observe as the oil floats on top of the water due to its lower density.

Create Your Color

  • Add a few drops of food coloring to the mixture.
  • Watch as the color sinks through the oil, creating a beautiful visual effect.

Initiate the Lava Effect

  • Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces.
  • Drop one piece into the container and watch as it reacts, creating bubbles and moving the colored water up and down like a lava lamp!

Experiment

  • You can repeat the process by adding more Alka-Seltzer pieces.
  • Close the lid if desired but always ensure to monitor the reaction.

Notes

Color combinations can be mixed for unique effects. Use different containers to experiment with shapes and sizes. Consider adding glow-in-the-dark paint or stickers for a fun twist!
