Ingredients
  

Materials

  • 1 bottle Empty clear plastic or glass bottle Clean and dry thoroughly.
  • 2/3 cup Vegetable oil (or baby oil) This will float on top of the water.
  • 1/3 cup Water Fill until about one-third full.
  • 10-15 drops Food coloring (variety of colors) Can use multiple colors for fun effects.
  • 1 tablet Alka-Seltzer tablets Use baking soda and vinegar for a different effect.
  • 1 optional Funnel For easier pouring of liquids.
  • to taste optional Glitter For added sparkle in your lava lamp.

Preparation

  • Clean and dry the bottle thoroughly.
  • If using a funnel, place it in the opening of the bottle.

Creating the Lava Lamp

  • Pour water into the bottle until it is about one-third full.
  • Carefully pour vegetable oil into the bottle until it is nearly full.
  • Add 10-15 drops of food coloring to the bottle.
  • Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into a few pieces and drop in one piece at a time.
  • Keep adding Alka-Seltzer to renew the effect.
  • Cap the bottle and display it as a fun decorative piece.

Notes

Experiment with different colors, scents, and glitters. Keep the lamp out of direct sunlight to preserve color and effect.
