Preparation

  • Start with a clean, dry bottle.
  • Fill it about 1/4 full with water.

Add Color

  • Add a few drops of food coloring into the water.
  • Watch as the color beautifully disperses.

Pour in the Oil

  • Carefully pour vegetable oil into the bottle, filling it almost to the top.
  • Observe how the oil forms a separate layer on top of the colored water.

Create the Lava Effect

  • Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into pieces and add them to the bottle one at a time.
  • Watch as colorful bubbles rise and fall, creating that mesmerizing lava lamp effect.

Customize (Optional)

Notes

Experiment with different food colorings and bottle sizes. You can also swap materials; baking soda and vinegar can create a similar reaction to Alka-Seltzer.
