  • 1 piece Clear glass jar or bottle Any size works
  • 1 cup Water Warm water is best
  • 1 cup Vegetable oil Any kind works
  • a few drops Food coloring Oil-based works well
  • as desired tablespoon Glitter or small sequins Optional for added sparkle
  • as desired sheets Tissues or colored paper For added design
  • 1 piece Stir stick or spoon For mixing
  • 1 piece Small funnel Optional
  • 1 piece Permanent markers To decorate the jar

Preparation

  • Gather all your materials in a quiet space. Arrange them so you can easily reach each item while you work.
  • Carefully wash and dry your glass jar or bottle.
  • Using the funnel, pour warm water into your jar, filling it about halfway.
  • Slowly add vegetable oil to the jar until it reaches the top.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring to the jar and watch the color swirl into the water.
  • Sprinkle in some glitter or sequins for added sparkle.
  • Decorate the outside of the jar with permanent markers as desired.
  • Place the finished sun catcher in a sunny spot by the window.

Notes

Store in a safe spot away from direct sunlight to protect it from heat or fading colors. You can refresh the design by adding new layers of color or embellishments.
