Eggshell Geodes Craft
A fun craft project transforming eggshells into beautiful, colorful geode-like creations. Perfect for all ages, it encourages creativity and exploration.
Ingredients
Materials
- 1 dozen Clean, emptied eggshells Use an egg carton for support
- as needed Food coloring or liquid watercolors Choose colors for your geodes
- 1/2 cup Epsom salt Use for crystal formation
- 1 cup Warm water For mixing solution
- several Small bowls For mixing colors
- 1 Paintbrush or dropper For filling eggshells
- as desired Glitter Optional for sparkly effect
- 1 Baking sheet or tray For drying
- several Paper towels For drying and cleaning
Instructions
Preparation
- Carefully crack the eggshells in half and rinse them out to remove any residue. Pat dry with paper towels.
- Place eggshell halves into an egg carton to support them as they dry.
Mix Your Solution
- In a small bowl, mix warm water with Epsom salt. Use about 1/2 cup of Epsom salt for every cup of warm water.
- Stir until the salt is fully dissolved, creating a saturated solution.
Add Color
- Divide the solution into separate bowls if using multiple colors.
- Add food coloring or liquid watercolors to each bowl. Stir to mix.
Fill the Eggshells
- Using a dropper or paintbrush, fill each eggshell half with the colored Epsom salt solution.
- Let the mixture sit for a few minutes to allow the colors to penetrate.
Let Them Dry
- Arrange the filled eggshells on a baking sheet or tray.
- Allow them to dry overnight in a cool, dry place. You can also put them in the fridge to speed up the crystallization process.
Reveal Your Geodes
- Once fully dried, carefully peel away the eggshells. You should see beautiful crystal formations inside that resemble geodes!
Notes
Color Swaps: Experiment with different shades to see how they blend. Use Other Salts: Try different salts like table salt or sea salt for varied textures. Add Glitter: For a sparkly effect, sprinkle glitter into the egg mixture before it dries. Various Sizes: Use larger eggs or even different shaped shells (like avocados) for bigger geodes.
