For the Fireworks

  • 1 clear jar Clear glass or plastic jar Ensure it's clear to enjoy the visual effects.
  • ¾ jar Water Fill the jar about ¾ full with water.
  • 2-3 tablespoons Vegetable oil (or any light-colored oil) Can substitute with coconut oil or olive oil.
  • a few drops Food coloring (various colors) Use different colors for a more vibrant display.
  • 1 spoon Spoon for stirring For mixing the oil and food coloring.
  • optional Glitter For added sparkle if desired.

Preparation

  • Fill your jar about ¾ full with water to create the base.
  • In a separate bowl, combine 2-3 tablespoons of vegetable oil.

Creating the Fireworks

  • Add a few drops of food coloring to the oil, using different colors for a vibrant display.
  • Observe as the food coloring settles at the bottom of the oil due to density differences.

Mix and Observe

  • Slowly and carefully pour the oil and food coloring mixture into the jar filled with water.
  • Watch as the food coloring 'explodes' and disperses, creating swirling patterns reminiscent of fireworks!

Add Sparkle

  • If desired, sprinkle some glitter on top for a shimmering effect.

Notes

For variations, you can use natural dyes from fruits or vegetables, experiment with different oils, or add essential oils to enhance the sensory experience. Discuss the science behind the activity with children for educational fun.
