Ingredients

Main Materials

  • 1 jar A clean glass jar (clear is best) Any clear container can work, but glass provides the best visual effect.
  • 3/4 full Water Fill the jar to this level, leaving some space at the top.
  • a few tablespoons Vegetable oil (or any light cooking oil) Can substitute with canola or almond oil, avoid heavy oils.
  • Food coloring (various colors for a vibrant display) Mix or layer for different effects.
  • 1 spoon A spoon or stirrer To mix the oil and food coloring.
  • Optional: Glitter (for extra sparkle!) Add on top for added shimmer.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Fill the glass jar with water, leaving some space at the top (approximately three-quarters full).
  • In a separate small bowl, combine a few tablespoons of vegetable oil with drops of food coloring. The colors can be mixed or layered for different effects.
  • Using the spoon or stirrer, gently mix the oil and food coloring. Observe how the food coloring forms droplets that sink and spread through the water, creating stunning 'fireworks.'
  • Optionally, sprinkle some glitter on top for added shimmer and watch how it interacts with the color bursts.

Notes

Customize your displays with different colors, try various oils, and add glitter for sparkle. Use this craft as a teaching tool about density and chemical reactions.
