Ingredients
  

Lava Rock Base

  • 1 cup Baking soda Main ingredient for the lava rock base
  • ¼ cup Canola oil Can be substituted with vegetable oil or any light oil

Coloring and Molding

  • ½ cup White vinegar Used to create the fizzing reaction when poured over the rocks
  • various Liquid food coloring Choose different colors for vibrant lava rocks
  • small containers or silicone molds Small containers or silicone molds For shaping the lava rocks

Tools

  • 1 Plastic mixing bowl For mixing the ingredients
  • 1 Mixing spoon For combining the ingredients
  • 1 Tray To catch overflow during the fizzing reaction

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Set up your tray and cover the area with newspaper or a plastic mat to catch spills.

Mixing

  • In the mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of baking soda with ¼ cup of canola oil.
  • Stir until the mixture resembles damp sand.

Adding Color

  • Divide the mixture into small bowls, depending on how many colors you want.
  • Add a few drops of liquid food coloring to each bowl and mix well until the color is evenly distributed.

Molding

  • Pack the colored mixtures tightly into your small containers or silicone molds.
  • Press down firmly to ensure they hold their shape.
  • Let them dry for several hours or until solid.

Fizzing Reaction

  • When ready to use, remove the lava rocks from the molds.
  • Place them in a shallow container or outside and pour ½ cup of white vinegar over them.
  • Watch in amazement as they bubble and fizz!

Notes

Experiment with different food coloring combinations for unique shades. Incorporate essential oils for scented lava rocks. Explore different shapes using ice cube trays or cookie cutters.
