Materials

  • 1 bottle or jar Clear plastic bottle or glass jar (with lid)
  • 1 cup Vegetable oil (or any clear oil) Can use mineral oil or baby oil as alternatives.
  • 1 cup Water
  • 5-10 drops Food coloring (any color) Customize with your favorite colors.
  • 1 tablet Alka-Seltzer tablets (or similar fizzy tablets)
  • optional Glitter or small sequins For extra sparkle.
  • 1 Funnel For easy pouring.

Instructions

Preparing Your Bottle

  • Clean the bottle or jar to ensure it is clean and dry.
  • Fill the bottle halfway with water, leaving enough space for the oil.

Adding the Oil

  • Using a funnel, slowly add the vegetable oil until the bottle is almost full.
  • Observe how the oil forms a separate layer above the water.

Adding Color

  • Add 5-10 drops of food coloring and watch as it creates colorful blobs that sink and spread through the water.

Creating the Lava Effect

  • Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces and drop it into the bottle.
  • Observe the magical bubbling effect as the colored water and oil interact.
  • Screw the lid on tightly. If using as a lamp, place it on a flat surface and shine a light underneath for a fantastic visual.

Notes

Customize colors with different food dye layers. Use essential oils for added scents. Different containers can provide unique aesthetics.
