Growing Crystal Snowman

Ingredients
  

Snowman Materials

  • 1 cup water For creating the crystal solution.
  • 3 tablespoons Borax Available in the laundry aisle.
  • 2 pieces clean, empty glass jars One larger and one smaller jar for the snowman body.
  • 1 small carrot For the snowman's nose.
  • 2 pieces buttons For the snowman's eyes.
  • 1 sheet black construction paper To create a small hat.
  • 1 piece string or twine To fashion the snowman.
  • 1 sturdy stick stick For the snowman's arms.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Heat 1 cup of water in a pot until it reaches a near-boil.
  • Remove from heat and gradually stir in 3 tablespoons of Borax until fully dissolved. The solution should be clear.

Assembly

  • Using a piece of string, fashion your snowman’s body using the two jars (place the smaller jar on top of the larger one).
  • Carefully place the carrot for the nose and buttons for eyes on the snowman. Use the paper to create a small hat.

Pouring the Solution

  • Slowly pour the Borax solution into the larger jar until the snowman is submerged.

Growth Time

  • Leave the jars undisturbed overnight. Crystals will begin to form around the snowman within a few hours.

Notes

You can add food coloring to the solution for festive crystals. Collaboration with others is encouraged to make multiple snowmen.
