Heart-Shaped Borax Crystals
Craft beautiful heart-shaped borax crystals that add sparkle to your home while providing an educational experience in crystallization.
Ingredients
Materials
- 6 tablespoons Borax (sodium borate)
- 2 cups Water
- 1 piece Heat-resistant glass jar or bowl (clear)
- 1 piece Pipe cleaners (red or pink for hearts)
- 1 piece String
- 1 piece Pencil or stick
- optional Food coloring
- 1 cup Measuring cup
- 1 spoon Spoon for stirring
Instructions
Preparation
- Take a pipe cleaner and bend it into a heart shape. Twist the ends to secure the shape.
- Attach a string to the top of the heart.
Create the Borax Solution
- In a pot or kettle, boil 2 cups of water.
- Carefully add 6 tablespoons of Borax to the boiling water and stir until fully dissolved.
- For added color, mix in a few drops of food coloring.
Assemble the Craft
- Pour the hot Borax solution into a heat-resistant jar or bowl.
- Tie the other end of the string with the heart shape to a pencil or stick.
- Place the pencil across the top of the jar so that the heart hangs down in the solution.
Wait for Crystals to Form
- Leave the jar undisturbed in a cool place for at least 6 hours (overnight is best).
Notes
Experiment with different cookie cutter shapes, food coloring, and glitter for variations. Clean crystals gently under cold water to remove residue.
