Ingredients

Materials

  • 6 tablespoons Borax (sodium borate)
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 piece Heat-resistant glass jar or bowl (clear)
  • 1 piece Pipe cleaners (red or pink for hearts)
  • 1 piece String
  • 1 piece Pencil or stick
  • optional Food coloring
  • 1 cup Measuring cup
  • 1 spoon Spoon for stirring

Instructions

Preparation

  • Take a pipe cleaner and bend it into a heart shape. Twist the ends to secure the shape.
  • Attach a string to the top of the heart.

Create the Borax Solution

  • In a pot or kettle, boil 2 cups of water.
  • Carefully add 6 tablespoons of Borax to the boiling water and stir until fully dissolved.
  • For added color, mix in a few drops of food coloring.

Assemble the Craft

  • Pour the hot Borax solution into a heat-resistant jar or bowl.
  • Tie the other end of the string with the heart shape to a pencil or stick.
  • Place the pencil across the top of the jar so that the heart hangs down in the solution.

Wait for Crystals to Form

  • Leave the jar undisturbed in a cool place for at least 6 hours (overnight is best).

Notes

Experiment with different cookie cutter shapes, food coloring, and glitter for variations. Clean crystals gently under cold water to remove residue.
