Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • food coloring (optional) Add to wet mixture if desired.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and cream of tartar. Stir well to ensure even distribution.

  • Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring with a spatula or wooden spoon until a thick dough begins to form.

Cooking

  • Transfer the mixture to a stove on low heat. Stir continuously until the dough thickens and pulls away from the sides of the pan, approximately 3-5 minutes.

Kneading and Storing

  • Once cool enough to handle, knead the dough on a clean, flat surface for a few minutes until it reaches a smooth consistency.
  • Place the finished play dough in an airtight container to keep it fresh.

Notes

You can customize play dough colors and scents using food dyes and essential oils. Vary the texture by mixing in glitter or sand. Substitute wheat flour with gluten-free options if necessary.
