Preparation

  • Step 1: Gather Ingredients - Collect all the materials listed above for easy access.
  • Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients - In a large pot, combine flour, salt, and cream of tartar. Stir with a whisk or spoon until well mixed.
  • Step 3: Add Wet Ingredients - Carefully add water and vegetable oil to the dry ingredients.
  • Step 4: Color Your Dough - If you want colored playdough, add a few drops of food coloring at this stage and mix until the color is even.
  • Step 5: Cook the Mixture - Place the pot on medium heat. Stir continuously as the mixture heats up. Feel the dough begin to thicken and it will start to pull away from the sides of the pot.
  • Step 6: Knead the Dough - Once the dough forms a ball, transfer it to a clean surface. Let it cool slightly then knead it with your hands for a few minutes until smooth.
  • Step 7: Store It Right - Wrap your playdough in wax paper or place it in an airtight container to keep it fresh and ready for play.
