Ingredients

For the Playdough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • as needed Food coloring (optional) Add to customize colors

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt, and 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar. Stir the dry ingredients together until well mixed.

Mixing Wet Ingredients

  • In a separate bowl, mix 2 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. If you want colored playdough, add a few drops of food coloring to the mixture now for even color distribution.

Cooking

  • Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture, stirring continuously to eliminate lumps. Transfer the mixture to a saucepan and cook over medium heat. Stir constantly until the mixture thickens and starts pulling away from the sides—this should take about 3-5 minutes.

Cooling and Kneading

  • Once thick, remove the playdough from the heat and let it cool slightly. Once it’s cool enough to handle, knead it with your hands until it’s smooth and elastic.

Storage

  • Place the playdough in an airtight container to keep it fresh for weeks.

Notes

Experiment with different colors, scents, and textures by adding essential oils or materials like glitter and sand. Homemade playdough can last 2-4 weeks if stored properly in an airtight container.
