  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Food coloring (optional) Add to customize colors
  • Essential oils or scent (optional) Add to customize scents

Instructions

Combining Ingredients

  • In a medium-sized saucepan, mix 2 cups of flour, 1/2 cup of salt, and 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar. Stir until well combined.
  • Pour in 2 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil into the dry mixture. If desired, add food coloring or essential oils.

Cooking

  • Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir continuously. The mixture will begin to thicken. Keep stirring until it forms a doughy ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan.

Cooling and Kneading

  • Remove the pan from heat and let the dough cool for a few minutes. Once it’s cool enough to handle, knead the dough with your hands for a few minutes until smooth.

Storage

  • Allow the playdough to cool completely before storing it in an airtight container.

Notes

Tips for variations include mixing different food colorings, trying various essential oils, and incorporating glitter or small beads for added texture. For a gluten-free option, substitute flour with a gluten-free blend.
