  • 1-2 tsp Flavored drink mix (like Kool-Aid)
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Cornstarch (optional, for dusting)

Preparing Your Workspace

  • Gather all the ingredients and measure them out.
  • Lay out parchment paper on your baking sheet to prevent sticking.

Cooking the Mixture

  • In a saucepan, combine granulated sugar, corn syrup, and a few drops of food coloring if desired.
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves.
  • Once dissolved, stop stirring and monitor the temperature with the candy thermometer until it reaches 300°F (hard crack stage).
  • Remove from heat and quickly stir in baking soda and flavored drink mix, then pour the mixture onto the prepared baking sheet.

Cooling and Breaking Apart

  • Quickly spread the mixture evenly on the baking sheet.
  • Allow it to cool completely, which may take about 30 minutes.
  • Once cooled, use your hands to break the candy into small pieces.

Storing Your Pop Rocks

  • Optionally, dust the pieces with cornstarch to prevent sticking.
  • Store the Pop Rocks in an airtight container to maintain the popping effect.
