Kinetic Sand
A simple and customizable recipe for homemade kinetic sand, perfect for sensory play and creative fun.
Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup fine sand (such as play sand) For smoother texture, use fine sand.
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
Wet Ingredients
- 3/4 cup water
- 1 tablespoon dish soap
- to taste food coloring (optional) Customize to match your theme.

- 1 mixing bowl
- 1 storage container To keep the sand fresh.
Instructions
Preparation
- In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of fine sand and 1/2 cup of cornstarch. Stir them together until fully blended.
- In a separate container, mix 3/4 cup of water with 1 tablespoon of dish soap. If using, add a few drops of food coloring and mix until uniform.
- Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring continuously as the mixture begins to clump together.
- Once combined, use your hands to knead the mixture for a few minutes until the desired consistency is achieved.
Storage
- Place the finished kinetic sand into a storage container to keep it fresh.
- Enjoy molding and playing with your creation!
Notes
Customize texture with baby oil or coconut oil for smoother sand. Mix different food colorings for unique shades. Incorporate glitter or small beads for extra sensory fun.
