Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients

  • 1 bottle Clear plastic or glass bottle About two-thirds full with water
  • 2/3 full Water Fill the bottle about two-thirds full
  • 1 bottle Vegetable oil Pour in until the bottle is almost full
  • several drops Food coloring Any color of your choice
  • 1 tablet Alka-Seltzer tablet Can also use baking soda and vinegar

Optional Enhancements

  • as desired Glitter or small decorative items Optional for added effect

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Start by filling your clear bottle about two-thirds full with water.
  • Carefully pour in vegetable oil until the bottle is almost full, leaving a little space at the top.
  • Add several drops of food coloring to the mixture.
  • Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces and drop one into the bottle.
  • Replace the cap or leave it off for an open-top effect and turn off the lights to see your lava lamp glow.

Notes

Experiment with different colors of food coloring and use glitter for a shimmering effect. You can also try different bottle sizes to see how it changes the look and flow.
