  • 1 jar Clear plastic or glass jar with a lid Make sure it is clean for clarity.
  • 1/3 jar Vegetable oil or mineral oil Layer above the water.
  • 1/3 jar Water Fill the jar about 1/3 full.
  • Several drops drops Food coloring (various colors) Customize the color of the water.
  • 1 tablet Alka-Seltzer tablet or baking soda Use for creating the lava effect.
  • Optional Decorative glitter For added sparkle.
  • Optional light Small LED tea light For a glowing effect.
  • 1 unit Funnel Helpful for pouring.

Preparation

  • Clean the jar thoroughly to ensure clarity for light filtering.
  • Fill your jar about 1/3 full with water and add several drops of food coloring to achieve your desired color.
  • Carefully pour oil into the jar until it is nearly full, leaving some space at the top.
  • Sprinkle a touch of glitter into the mixture for added visual effect.
  • Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into several pieces and drop them into the jar one at a time.
  • For a glowing effect, place an LED tea light underneath the jar and turn it on.

Notes

Experiment with different food coloring combinations and types of glitter for unique designs. Supervise younger kids due to small parts.
