  • 1 unit Clear plastic bottle or jar with a lid Any size bottle or jar can work.
  • 1/3 full Vegetable oil Can substitute with mineral oil or baby oil.
  • 1/3 full Water Fill about one-third full.
  • several drops Food coloring (various colors) Choose colors based on your liking.
  • 1-2 tablets Alka-Seltzer tablets or baking soda Break tablets or use baking soda with vinegar.
  • optional Clear adhesive tape For hanging the suncatcher.
  • optional String or ribbon for hanging To add an aesthetic touch.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Thoroughly clean and dry your plastic bottle or jar to ensure it’s clear of any residues.
  • Fill the bottle about one-third full with water.

Add Oil

  • Slowly pour vegetable oil into the bottle until it’s nearly full, leaving some space at the top.
  • Observe how the water and oil don’t mix, creating that classic lava lamp effect!

Color Your Creation

  • Add several drops of food coloring to the mixture. Watch as the color sinks through the oil.

Create Movement

  • Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into a few pieces or stir in a spoonful of baking soda into the bottle.
  • Cap the bottle tightly and give it a gentle shake to mix.
  • Place the bottle in sunlight and enjoy the mesmerizing movement of colored bubbles!

Notes

Experiment with different food coloring shades to match your décor, and consider adding glitter for a sparkling effect. For a more dramatic impact, use a larger bottle.
