  • 1 jar Clear glass or plastic jar with lid The clearer the jar, the better the display.
  • 1/3 full Water Fill the jar about one-third full.
  • nearly 1 jar Vegetable oil or baby oil This will create a barrier above the water.
  • several drops Food coloring Any colors you like to create a colorful display.
  • 1-2 Alka-Seltzer tablets or baking soda Alka-Seltzer creates a fizzing reaction simulating lightning.
  • 1 Flashlight Optional for added effect.
  • 1 Spoon or small stir stick For mixing the ingredients.

Preparation

  • Start with a clean, dry jar. The clearer the jar, the better the display.
  • Pour water into the jar until it is about one-third full.
  • Gently pour vegetable or baby oil into the jar, filling it nearly to the top.
  • Add drops of food coloring to the jar and observe how the colors mix and swirl.
  • Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces and drop one piece into the jar.
  • Shine a flashlight on the jar to enhance the colors and movement.

Notes

Experiment with different food color combinations, try different oils, and consider adding glitter for a magical touch. Ensure that young children are supervised during the process.
