Materials

  • Broken or whole crayons Broken or whole crayons (various colors) Use broken crayons to reduce waste.
  • 1 piece Silicone star-shaped molds
  • 1 piece Oven or heat-safe tray for melting Necessary for melting the crayons.
  • 1 piece Baking sheet or shallow dish To catch drips.
  • optional Parchment paper For easier cleanup.
  • optional Cooking spray To help with easier removal.
  • 1 piece Scissors For preparing crayon pieces.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Gather broken crayons and remove any paper wrappers.
  • Using scissors, break the crayons into smaller pieces for quicker melting (around 1-inch chunks).

Melting Process

  • Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C).
  • Place the crayon pieces into the silicone star-shaped molds, mixing colors for a marbled effect.
  • Put the molds on a baking sheet and bake in the oven for about 10-15 minutes.
  • Watch closely until the crayons are fully melted but still vibrant.

Cooling & Display

  • Allow the molded crayons to cool completely until they solidify.
  • You can speed this up by placing them in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes.
  • Once cooled, gently pop the star suncatchers out of the molds.
  • Hang your star suncatchers in a sunny window using string or clear fishing line.

Notes

Experiment with different color combinations and shapes. For added sparkle, you can include glitter before hardening. Using removable window adhesive helps avoid damage when placing the suncatchers.
