Ingredients
  

Materials for Lava Lamp

  • 1 jar Empty glass jar with a lid The clearer the glass, the better your lava lamp will look.
  • 1/4 jar Water This will be the base for your lava effect.
  • Vegetable oil to fill Vegetable oil Should float on top of water since they do not mix.
  • a few drops Food coloring (any color) Creates a colorful hue in the water.
  • 1 tablespoon Baking soda Creates a fizzing reaction when mixed with vinegar.
  • a few drops Vinegar Should be mixed with baking soda for the lava effect.
  • 1 Small flashlight or glow sticks Used to illuminate and enhance the glowing effect.

Preparation Steps

  • Begin with a clean, dry glass jar.
  • Pour water into the jar until it’s about a quarter full.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring and watch as the color disperses in the water.
  • Slowly fill the rest of the jar with vegetable oil.
  • In a small bowl, mix a tablespoon of baking soda with a few drops of vinegar and quickly pour this mixture into your jar.
  • For a glowing effect, place a small flashlight under the jar or add glow sticks inside.

Notes

Experiment with different food coloring combinations for a unique glow. Use a black light for a more dramatic glow effect or try different sizes of containers for varied results. Adding fine glitter before pouring in the oil creates extra sparkle.
