Mosquito Repellent Candles
Create your own mosquito repellent candles using natural ingredients and essential oils, perfect for outdoor gatherings.
Ingredients
Candle Base
- 1 cup soy wax flakes
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
Essential Oils
- 10-15 drops essential oils (e.g., citronella, eucalyptus, lavender)
Candle Preparation Materials
- 1 unit candle wick
- 1 unit heatproof container (e.g., glass jar, metal tin)
- 1 unit double boiler or microwave-safe bowl
- 1 unit stir sticks or spoons
- 1 unit thermometer (optional)
Instructions
Preparation
- Clear a flat surface for your crafting and lay down newspaper or a crafting mat to catch any spills.
Melting Wax
- Heat water in the bottom pot of a double boiler. Place the wax flakes in the top pot, stirring occasionally until melted (about 10-15 minutes).
- Alternatively, place soy wax in a microwave-safe bowl, heating in 30-second intervals, and stirring until fully melted, being careful not to overheat.
Combining Ingredients
- Add coconut oil to the melted wax for added moisture and scent throw.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly, ensuring it’s still liquid but not too hot.
- Stir in essential oils until well mixed.
Preparing Wicks and Containers
- Secure the wick to the bottom of your container using a small amount of melted wax or adhesive.
- Pour the wax mixture into your prepared container while holding the wick upright.
Setting the Candle
- Allow the candles to cool completely, which may take a few hours.
- Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch above the surface.
Enjoy!
- Light your candle outdoors to enjoy a serene atmosphere free of annoying mosquitos.
Notes
Experiment with different essential oils for unique scents, use candle dye for color, and consider repurposing containers like old tea cups or mason jars. Adjust essential oil quantities based on personal preference.
