Materials

  • 1 piece square piece of paper (any size, 6×6 inches is a good start) Any type of foldable paper can be used.
  • flat surface for folding Ensure it is a clean, stable surface.
  • optional: markers or colored pencils for decoration For personalizing the crane.

Instructions

Folding Steps

  • Lay your square paper flat, with the colored side facing down (if applicable).
  • Fold the paper diagonally in half to form a triangle. Press the fold firmly, then unfold.
  • Fold the paper diagonally in the opposite direction to create another triangle. Again, press the crease and then unfold.
  • With the paper facing you, fold the top corners down to the center crease to create a kite shape.
  • Take the bottom point of the kite and fold it up toward the top of the kite, which is the tip of your crane.
  • Fold down the two upper flaps (the sides of the kite) to form the crane's wings.
  • To make the neck and tail, take one of the flaps and fold it up at a diagonal, while the other flap remains down.
  • Gently pull the wings down to give your crane some shape. Use your fingers to adjust the neck and tail for a more lifelike appearance.
  • Congratulations! Your origami crane is complete. Give it a gentle squeeze to see it take off.

Notes

Experiment with different types of paper such as patterned or textured paper. Try making smaller or larger cranes by starting with different sizes of square paper. Decorate your paper beforehand for a personalized touch.
