Ingredients
  

For the volcano

  • 1 small small pumpkin (or pumpkin-shaped craft item) Any open container can also work.
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda Approximate amount used.
  • 1 cup vinegar Needed for the chemical reaction.
  • 1 squirt dish soap Adds to the bubbling effect.
  • 1 optional food coloring For colorful eruptions.

For setup

  • 1 plastic tray plastic tray To catch spills.
  • 1 spoon spoon or small scoop For mixing and pouring.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Carve or cut a small opening at the top of the pumpkin to serve as the volcano's crater.
  • Scoop out some of the pulp and seeds for increased space for the mix if desired.

Mixing

  • Place the pumpkin on a plastic tray to catch any overflow.
  • In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of baking soda and a squirt of dish soap. Mix well.
  • Add food coloring to the mixture for added visual flair.

Eruption

  • Pour the baking soda mixture into the pumpkin.
  • Slowly pour 1 cup of vinegar into the pumpkin's opening.
  • Watch as the chemical reaction occurs, producing bubbling and overflow.

Observation

  • Observe the eruption and discuss the chemical reactions with the kids.
  • Encourage them to describe the colors, sounds, and textures they perceive.

Notes

This experiment is safe for young children with supervision. Materials are non-toxic and easy to clean up. Consider variations like different colors or scents using essential oils.
