Ingredients
For the Crystal Trees
- 3 cups white sugar (or Epsom salt)
- 1 cup water
- as needed food coloring (various colors)
- as needed pipe cleaners (various colors)
- 1 glass jar or cup
- 1 saucepan
- 1 spoon for stirring
- as needed string (optional for hanging)
- 1 tray or plate to catch spills
Instructions
Preparation
- Bend the pipe cleaners into the shape of a tree, with branches extending outwards. Twist several pipe cleaners together to form a trunk.
Make the Sugar Solution
- In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of water and 3 cups of sugar (or Epsom salt). Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring continuously until everything dissolves completely—this may take a few minutes. Once dissolved, remove from heat.
Add Color
- Pour the mixture into a jar, filling it about halfway. Add drops of food coloring and stir gently until you achieve your desired brightness.
Immerse Your Trees
- Carefully place your pipe cleaner tree into the jar, ensuring the bottom is submerged. If using string, attach it to the tree and hang it from the top of the jar instead.
Let It Crystalize
- Place the jar in a cool, undisturbed area for 24-48 hours. Over time, watch as beautiful crystals begin to form!
