Instructions
Preparation
- Begin by bending the pipe cleaners into fun, urchin-like shapes. Secure one end to your pencil, so it hangs down within the jar.
Make the Solution
- In a pot, boil about two cups of water. Once it reaches a steady bubble, carefully add three tablespoons of borax. Stir gently until the borax dissolves completely.
Add Color
- Stir in several drops of food coloring into the solution and watch the colors swirl.
Fill Your Jars
- Carefully pour the borax solution into your glass jars, ensuring the pipe cleaner shapes dip into the mixture.
Set Up for Growth
- Place the pencil across the top of each jar so your crystal shapes hang suspended in the solution without touching the bottom.
Let Time Work Its Magic
- Allow the jars to sit in a quiet spot for several hours or overnight.
Observe the Growth
- Check back to see the crystals forming. You may notice the spiky urchins taking shape, sparkling in the light.
Finish and Admire
- Once you see delightful growth, gently remove the shapes from the jars. Rinse them with cool water to wash off any excess borax, and let them dry.
