Create stunning colorful geodes using simple eggshells, food coloring, and salt in a fun and educational craft project.
Ingredients
Materials for Rainbow Eggshell Geodes
- 6 pieces Empty eggshells Cleaned and dried, only the outer half used.
- 3 tablespoons Epsom salt or sugar Use as a crystallizing agent.
- 1.5 cups Hot water For mixing with salts.
- 10 drops Food coloring or liquid watercolors Multiple colors can be used for varied effects.
- Optional Glitter For added sparkle.
- 2-3 pieces Small bowls or containers For mixing solutions.
- 2-3 pieces Spoons or stirring sticks For mixing the colored solutions.
Instructions
Preparation
- Gently rinse empty eggshells and let them dry completely. Only use the outer half of each shell.
Create the Colored Solution
- In separate bowls, mix 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt or sugar with 1/2 cup of hot water.
- Add several drops of food coloring or liquid watercolor to each bowl, stirring until the color is fully mixed.
Fill the Eggshells
- Carefully pour the colored solutions into each eggshell, filling them about halfway.
Let Them Crystallize
- Place the filled eggshells in a safe spot and let them sit overnight (or longer) until crystals form on the eggshell interior.
- You'll notice the colors intensifying as crystals develop.
Reveal Your Geodes
- Once crystallization is complete, gently crack the eggshells to reveal your stunning geodes.
- Optionally, sprinkle glitter on top for additional sparkle.
Notes
Customization: Alternate colors for a gradient effect or mix different colors in one shell. Alternative Materials: Try using different types of salts or sugars to create varied crystal textures. Safety Note: Ensure young children are supervised to avoid sharp edges of broken shells.
