Instructions
Preparation
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, vegetable oil, and cream of tartar.
- Stir in water until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps.
Cooking the Dough
- Divide the dough evenly into six portions for each color of the rainbow.
- Drop food coloring into each portion. Start with a few drops and mix until you reach your desired shade.
- Transfer each colored mixture into a saucepan and cook over medium heat.
- Stir continuously until the dough begins to thicken and forms a ball, approximately 3-5 minutes. The dough should feel slightly sticky but manageable.
Finishing Touches
- Remove the dough from the heat and let it cool slightly.
- Once cool enough to handle, knead each colored dough on a clean surface or wax paper until smooth.
- Layer each of the colored dough pieces together and gently roll or shape them into a rainbow form.
Notes
For added sensory experiences, you can incorporate glitter, sand, or beads. Store in an airtight container to keep your playdough fresh for weeks.
