  • 2 cups granulated sugar Key ingredient for crystallization.
  • 1 cup water Used to dissolve the sugar.

Materials

  • 4 Small glass jars or cups To hold the sugar solution.
  • 4 Wooden skewers (or string) For the sugar crystals to form on.
  • 4 Clothespins (optional) To hold the skewers in place.
  • 1 Saucepan For heating the sugar solution.
  • 1 Stirring spoon To mix the sugar and water.
  • 1 Measuring cups To measure sugar and water.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a saucepan, mix 2 cups of granulated sugar with 1 cup of water.
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar fully dissolves.

Coloring

  • Once the solution is clear, divide it into separate containers if using multiple colors.
  • Add food coloring to each container, stirring well until desired hue is achieved.

Setup for Crystallization

  • Pour the colored sugar solution into the glass jars or cups, filling them about ¾ full.
  • Insert a wooden skewer (or a piece of string) in each jar, securing it with a clothespin at the top.

Observation

  • Set the jars in a cool, dry place and wait for several days.
  • Check regularly to observe how the sugar crystals begin to form and grow.

Completion

  • After about a week, remove the skewers and allow the crystals to dry before displaying.

Notes

Experiment with different sugars, colors, and flavors for amazing variations. Adult supervision is recommended, especially for younger children.
