Rainbow Suncatcher Lava Lamp
Create a dazzling rainbow suncatcher lava lamp that brightens any space and teaches about liquid density through a fun and engaging craft.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 jar or bottle Clear plastic jar or bottle (with a lid) Make sure it’s clean and dry.
- 1/4 jar Water Fill the jar about one-quarter full.
- as needed jar Vegetable oil (or baby oil) Pour until the jar is almost full.
- a few drops Food coloring (various colors) Use a plastic funnel if necessary.
- 1 tablet Alka-Seltzer tablets (or effervescent tablet) Break into smaller pieces for effect.
- optional Glitter Sprinkle on top for sparkle.
- optional Plastic funnel For easier pouring of liquids.
- optional Plastic stir stick or straw For mixing food coloring.
Instructions
Preparation
- Take your clear plastic jar or bottle and remove any labels.
- Make sure it’s clean and dry for optimal results.
Mixing
- Pour water into the jar, filling it about one-quarter full.
- Slowly pour vegetable oil into the jar until it’s almost full, leaving a little space at the top.
Adding Color
- Using a plastic funnel (if needed), add a few drops of food coloring.
- Watch as the drops sink and mix to create beautiful swirls in the water!
Enhancing
- If you want a little sparkle, sprinkle some glitter on top.
Creating Lava Effect
- Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces.
- Drop one piece into the jar and watch as colorful blobs of water begin to rise and fall!
- For sustained action, add more tablet pieces as needed.
Sealing and Displaying
- Once done, seal the jar with the lid.
- Place your suncatcher in a sunny spot or near a window to maximize the light effect.

Consider using different oil types for varying effects, experiment with food coloring combinations, and add essential oils for a delightful scent.
