  • 1 bottle White glue
  • 1 cup Salt (table salt or coarse salt) Coarse salt produces bigger crystals.
  • Various drops Food coloring or liquid watercolors Experiment with different color combinations.
  • 1 sheet Cardstock or thick paper
  • 1 each Paintbrush or dropper
  • 1 each Shallow dish or tray For catching excess salt.
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 bottle Spray bottle (optional) For optional misting.

Preparation

  • Choose a well-ventilated area and cover surfaces with newspaper or a plastic drop cloth.

Creating the Artwork

  • Sketch a simple design on your cardstock with a pencil.
  • Use a paintbrush or dropper to apply glue along the lines of your design.
  • Pour salt over the glued areas while they are still wet and shake off any excess salt.
  • In a separate bowl, mix food coloring or watercolors with a small amount of water.
  • Using a dropper or paintbrush, carefully add the colored liquid to the salt-covered areas.
  • Allow your masterpiece to dry completely, which can take several hours or overnight.
  • Optionally, lightly mist with water from a spray bottle to encourage further crystal formation.

Notes

Customize colors, try different paper textures, and create seasonal themes. You can also incorporate glitter or use natural dyes for eco-friendly coloring.
