  • 1 cup Salt Regular or coarse sea salt can be used.
  • 1-3 tablespoons Food coloring or liquid watercolors For vibrant colors.
  • 1 piece Thick paper or cardboard This is the base for the painting.
  • 1 tray Tray or shallow dish To catch excess salt.

  • 1 cup Water Used to mix with colors.
  • 1 bowl Bowl for mixing colors (optional) To mix colors if needed.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Sketch a simple outline of your design on the thick paper or cardboard using a pencil for easy correction.
  • Trace over your design with white school glue, working quickly to avoid drying.
  • Generously sprinkle salt over the glue to ensure it is well covered, shaking off excess salt into the tray.
  • In a bowl, mix food coloring or liquid watercolors with a small amount of water to create vibrant colors.
  • Using a small paintbrush, dip it into your colored water and touch the brush to the salt to watch the color spread.
  • Allow your salt painting to dry completely; this may take a few hours or overnight.

Notes

Switch up colors by seasons or themes, use different paper types for varied textures, and add glitter for a special touch. Store completed pieces in a cool, dry place, ideally in a plastic sleeve or box to avoid damage.
