Ingredients
  

For the Lava Jar

  • 1 clear glass jar or container A tall, cylindrical jar works best.
  • 1/3 jar water Fill the jar about one-third full.
  • vegetable oil vegetable oil Pour until the jar is nearly full, leaving space at the top.
  • as needed drops food coloring Optional for color effects.
  • salt tablespoons salt Sprinkle into the jar to create the eruption.
  • 1 spoon spoon or stirring stick For mixing ingredients.
  • 1 funnel Optional for adding salt.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Select a clear jar or container to allow visibility of the effects.
  • Fill the jar about one-third full with water, and observe the clarity and depth.

Create the Lava Effect

  • Mix a few drops of food coloring in the water, if desired. Stir gently.
  • Slowly add vegetable oil on top of the water until the jar is nearly full, watching as the oil forms a distinct layer.

Start the Eruption

  • Sprinkle salt into the jar using a spoon or funnel, and observe the immediate reaction as 'lava' erupts from below the oil layer.
  • Enjoy the show as the colored water bubbles up and creates an enchanting erupting effect!

Notes

Experiment with multiple colors of food coloring for layers and consider adding essential oils for fragrance. Different types of salt can also create varying eruption effects.
