Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon flavoring extract (e.g., vanilla, peppermint) Choose your favorite flavor
  • as needed optional food coloring For coloring the taffy
  • as needed spray non-stick cooking spray For greasing the baking sheet

Instructions

Preparation

  • Spray your baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  • Clear a large area for stretching and pulling the taffy.

Cooking

  • In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, water, and salt.
  • Stir the mixture over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.
  • Using a candy thermometer, bring the mixture to a boil without stirring.
  • Once the temperature reaches 260°F (hard-ball stage), remove it from the heat.
  • Carefully stir in butter and your choice of flavoring extract.
  • If using food coloring, add it now to achieve your desired hue.
  • Pour the hot taffy onto the prepared baking sheet.
  • Allow it to cool for about 10-15 minutes until it's warm but manageable.

Pulling and Wrapping

  • Once cool enough to handle, grease your hands lightly and take a portion of the taffy.
  • Stretch and fold the taffy repeatedly for about 10-15 minutes until it becomes shiny and light in color.
  • Roll the taffy into long ropes about ½ inch in diameter.
  • Use kitchen scissors to cut into bite-sized pieces.
  • Wrap each piece in wax paper for easy storage.

Notes

You can experiment with different flavor extracts like lemon, orange, or coconut. For added texture, consider adding crushed nuts or sprinkles after pouring the taffy.
