Ingredients

Materials Needed

  • 2-3 pieces Natural seashells (clean and dry) Use different types of shells to see how they react.
  • 1 cup White vinegar Other liquids such as lemon juice or Coke can be used for different reactions.
  • 1 tablespoon Baking soda Adds a reaction after the vinegar.
  • 1 piece Clear plastic container For holding the seashells and liquid.
  • 1 piece Spoon For mixing.
  • optional Safety goggles Recommended for splash protection.
  • 1 piece Towel or paper napkin For cleanup.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Find a flat surface to work on, like a table or countertop and lay down a towel or paper napkin to catch any spills.
  • Place 2-3 clean seashells into your clear plastic container and observe their appearance and texture.

The Experiment

  • Carefully pour enough white vinegar into the container to fully submerge the seashells.
  • Wait for at least 20-30 minutes and keep an eye on the changing appearance of the shells, noting any fizzing or bubbling reactions.
  • After some time, sprinkle a little baking soda over the shells and watch the reaction.

Cleanup

  • Once you are done observing, carefully dispose of the shells and the solution and wipe down your workspace.

Notes

Customizations can include using different liquids or adding colors with food coloring. This experiment is safe for kids but always use safety goggles if concerned about splashes.
