Ingredients
  

Materials

  • 1 can Shaving cream (white or colored) Foamy or whipped types work best.
  • Various drops Food coloring (various colors) Can use liquid watercolor or colored juices as alternatives.
  • 1 container Clear container or glass For conducting the experiment.
  • 1 spoon Spoon or stick for stirring For mixing colors if using optional small cups.
  • Optional cups Small cups for mixing colors For color mixing if desired.

Preparation

  • Lay down some newspaper or an old towel to catch any spills.
  • Gather all materials within easy reach.

Experiment Steps

  • Pour water into the clear container, filling it about three-quarters full. Observe the water's level and clarity.
  • Gently spray shaving cream on top of the water to create a fluffy layer. Don’t stir it in; let it float!
  • Use droppers or spoons to add drops of food coloring onto the shaving cream and observe as the color sits and seeps through.
  • Experience the magic as the colors mix and swirl into the water below and discuss the changes in color and patterns.

Notes

Experiment with different colors, use scented shaving cream for an aromatic twist, or layer different colored waters in the container for visual effects. Always supervise young children during the activity.
