Ingredients

  • 2 cups salt
  • 4 tablespoons cream of tartar Can be omitted for a different texture.

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Food coloring (optional) For customizing color.
  • Essential oils (optional for scent) For adding fragrance.

Preparation

  • In a large saucepan, mix the flour, salt, and cream of tartar.
  • Pour in the water and vegetable oil. Stir until combined, ensuring no lumps remain.

Cooking

  • Place the saucepan on the stove over medium heat.
  • Stir continuously as the mixture thickens—watch for the transformation from liquid to dough!
  • Once the dough forms and pulls away from the sides, remove it from the heat.

Coloring and Scenting

  • Divide the dough into portions if adding different colors.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring and a chosen essential oil, then knead until fully incorporated.

Cooling and Storing

  • Allow the dough to cool before handling.
  • Store in an airtight container to keep it fresh.

Notes

Experiment with natural dyes and other scent alternatives like vanilla extract. Pair play dough with tools like cookie cutters for added fun.
