- 1 cup Baking soda Key ingredient for crystal formation
- 2 cups Water Hot water helps dissolve baking soda faster
- 1-2 pieces Pipe cleaners, any color Shape into fun designs
- 1 pieces Jar or glass One for each crystal
- 1 pieces Spoon for stirring Use to mix baking soda into water
- 1 pieces Pan for heating (optional) Helps dissolve baking soda faster
- 1 pieces String or thread (optional) For hanging the crystals
- Food coloring (optional) Add for colored crystals
Instructions
Preparation
- Twist and bend the pipe cleaners into fun shapes such as snowflakes or icicles.
- In a pan, boil the water (not necessary but recommended for faster dissolution).
- Stir in baking soda until fully dissolved. Note: It will bubble and foam initially!
- Once fully mixed, carefully pour the solution into your jar.
- Allow the solution to cool for a few minutes before proceeding.
- Attach string to your shaped pipe cleaner or place directly in the jar. Make sure it’s suspended and doesn’t touch the sides or bottom.
Growing Crystals
- Place the jar in a quiet, undisturbed spot for several days.
- Watch as crystals begin to form, checking back for visual updates.
Finishing Up
- Once crystals have fully formed (in about a week), gently remove the pipe cleaners.
- Display your beautiful creations as desired!
