  • 1 cup Whole milk (or dairy-free alternative) Higher fat content produces better results.
  • multiple drops Food coloring (multiple colors) Use different colors for more variety.
  • 1 teaspoon Dish soap Any type of dish soap will work.
  • 1 shallow dish Shallow dish or plate To hold the milk and colors.
  • 1 Toothpick or cotton swab For applying dish soap.
  • optional Plastic gloves To avoid staining your hands.

Preparation

  • Find a flat, safe space for your experiment to minimize spills.
  • Lay down some paper towels to catch any mess.

Execution

  • Pour enough milk into the shallow dish to cover the bottom.
  • Drop various colors of food coloring onto the milk's surface.
  • Observe how the colors spread and float, creating beautiful yet stationary patterns.
  • Dip the toothpick or cotton swab into the dish soap.
  • Touch the soap to the milk's surface and watch the immediate reaction. The colors will start to swirl and dance!
  • Try adding more colors or varying the amounts of dish soap to see different results.

Notes

Consider using different types of milk and soap for varying results. Glitter can also be added for extra sparkle. Take photos to capture the moment, as the colors fade quickly after the reaction.
