Ingredients

Materials for Volcano Eruption

  • 2 tablespoons Baking soda This is the main reactant.
  • 1/4 cup Vinegar This will react with the baking soda to create the eruption.
  • Optional Food coloring For adding color to the 'lava'.
  • Optional Dish soap For a foamy effect.
  • 1 small container Small container (like a plastic cup) This will hold the baking soda and vinegar.
  • 1 Tray or baking sheet To catch any overflow from the eruption.
  • 1 set Measuring spoons For accurately measuring the ingredients.
  • 1 spoon Spoon for mixing For mixing the ingredients together.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Set up your space by placing a tray or baking sheet on a flat surface to catch any overflowing lava.
  • Position the small container in the center of the tray. Build a 'mountain' using playdough, clay, or dirt around the container to resemble a volcano.

Create the Lava

  • In your container, add about 2 tablespoons of baking soda.
  • For colorful lava, add a few drops of food coloring and a squirt of dish soap for a foamy effect.

Erupt Your Volcano

  • Prepare about 1/4 cup of vinegar in a separate cup.
  • Slowly pour the vinegar into the container with baking soda and step back to watch the eruption!

Notes

For a shimmering effect, sprinkle some glitter into the mix. Experiment with various food coloring combinations for multi-colored eruptions. Changing the shape of the container will yield different eruption effects. Adjust the baking soda and vinegar ratios to explore various eruption heights and durations. Always supervise children during the experiment.
