Instructions

Create the Base

  • Prepare the Paper Mache Mixture: Combine 1 part flour with 2 parts water in a bowl and mix until smooth.
  • Blow Up the Balloon: Inflate the balloon to the desired size for your piñata and tie it off securely.

Mache it Up!

  • Apply Newspaper Strips: Dip a newspaper strip into your mixture, wipe off excess, and place it on the balloon. Continue overlapping strips until the entire surface is covered, aiming for at least three layers for strength.
  • Dry Time: Allow the first layer to dry completely, which can take several hours or overnight.

Shape Your Watermelon

  • Pop the Balloon: Once dry, gently pop the balloon and remove it to reveal the hollow shell.
  • Cut a Hole: Use scissors to create a hole in the top for filling it with candy.

Decorating

  • Paint the Piñata: Start with a base layer of green where the rind would be and let it dry completely.
  • Add Watermelon Flesh: Cut pink tissue paper into strips and glue or tape them around the inside of the piñata to represent the watermelon flesh.
  • Black Seeds: Cut small shapes from black paper or tissue and attach them to the outside.

Final Touches

  • Fill with Treats: Drop in your candy and small toys through the opening.
  • Seal It Up: Cover the opening with more strips of tissue paper.
  • Add a Hanging Loop: Tie string or ribbon around the top for hanging.

Display and Enjoy!

  • Hang your piñata in a strong spot at your party location.
  • Gather your guests for the fun!

Notes

You can customize colors and designs to match your event. Consider alternatives for fillings like small toys or healthier snacks. Use larger balloons for bigger piñatas or multiple smaller balloons for mini versions.
