Materials

  • 1 Clear contact paper or transparency sheets For sealing the suncatcher
  • Colored tissue paper (red, green, and black) For the watermelon slice design
  • 1 Scissors For cutting the template and tissue paper
  • 1 Pencil For drawing the template
  • 1 Ruler For measuring the template
  • 1 Craft knife (optional) For more intricate cutting
  • 1 String or suction cups For hanging the suncatcher

Instructions

Preparation & Design

  • Clear a flat surface where you can work comfortably.
  • Using your pencil and ruler, draw a large triangle shape that resembles a watermelon slice on a piece of paper.
  • Carefully cut out the triangle shape with scissors.
  • Cut a piece of contact paper or a transparency sheet, ensuring it is larger than your watermelon template.
  • Cut small pieces of red tissue paper for the flesh, green for the rind, and tiny circles of black for the seeds.
  • Place the red tissue pieces on the contact paper within the triangle to form the watermelon flesh.
  • Add green tissue on the outer edges for the rind.
  • Scatter the black pieces randomly for watermelon seeds.

Assembly

  • Once satisfied with your arrangement, place another piece of contact paper over the tissue paper to seal them in place.
  • Smooth out any air bubbles to ensure a flat surface.
  • Cut around the watermelon slice shape, leaving a small border for support.
  • Use string or suction cups to hang your suncatcher in a sunny window and enjoy the beautiful colors!

Notes

You can create other fruit slices using different colors of tissue paper. Consider adding glitter for sparkle or varying sizes for display. Supervise younger crafters when using sharp tools.
