  • 1 cup vinegar

Preparing the Watermelon

  • Select your watermelon: Choose a firm, ripe watermelon.
  • Cut the top off: Using a sharp knife, slice off about the top quarter of the watermelon to create a wide mouth.
  • Scoop out the flesh: Use a spoon to remove the watermelon flesh, setting it aside for later.

Creating Your Volcano

  • Place a small bowl or cup in the center of the hollowed-out watermelon to hold the lava mixture.
  • Pour about a cup of baking soda into the bowl.
  • Add several drops of food coloring to the baking soda.

Eruption Time

  • Gather your guests around for this exciting moment.
  • Slowly pour vinegar into the bowl with the baking soda.
  • Watch as the colorful 'lava' erupts from the watermelon, bubbling and cascading down the sides.

Serving

  • Serve the scooped-out watermelon flesh on the side, or mix it with other fruits in a large bowl for a refreshing fruit salad.

Notes

Feel free to customize colors and add different ingredients to your lava mix. Use towels to clean up any messes that occur during the eruption!
