Materials

  • 1 large watermelon Choose a ripe watermelon for best results.
  • 1/4 cup baking soda This will cause the eruption effect.
  • 1 cup vinegar (white or apple cider) Combine with food coloring for effect.
  • multiple drops food coloring Use various colors for a vibrant eruption.
  • 1 squirt dish soap Adds bubbles to the eruption.
  • 1 large tray or plastic sheet To catch the mess during the experiment.
  • 1 each knife For adult use only to cut the watermelon.
  • 1 each spoon or small cup For pouring the vinegar mixture.

Instructions
 

Preparing the Watermelon

  • Pick a large, ripe watermelon for the experiment.
  • Using a knife, carefully cut a small hole at the top of the watermelon, which will serve as the volcano's opening. Adult supervision is necessary.
  • Use a spoon to scoop out a little of the flesh inside to create more space for the reaction.

Creating the Eruption

  • Pour about 1/4 cup of baking soda into the cavity of the watermelon.
  • In a separate container, combine 1 cup of vinegar with several drops of food coloring and a squirt of dish soap.
  • Pour the colored vinegar mixture into the watermelon quickly. Step back and watch the eruption!

Notes

Experiment with different food coloring combinations for various lava effects. You can also add edible glitter for a magical touch or use flavored fizzy soda instead of vinegar for a different reaction. Always monitor young children during the experiment for safety.
